What you'll do in college
Marine and ocean engineering majors design the things that have to survive salt water — ship hulls, offshore platforms, submarines, underwater robots, harbor structures, and the propulsion plants that drive them. Coursework runs through fluid mechanics, hydrostatics and stability, wave mechanics, structural analysis, marine propulsion, and corrosion, stacked on the usual engineering math and physics core.
The split between the two halves of the field matters when you pick a school. Naval architecture programs focus on the vessel itself — how it floats, how it holds together, how it moves. Ocean engineering programs lean toward the environment around it, from coastal structures and offshore energy to underwater vehicles and sensors. The service and maritime academies add a third path, a license track where you graduate with a Coast Guard engineer's license and real sea time alongside the degree. Almost every program puts you in a towing tank eventually, dragging a hull model through water to find out whether your math was right.
What you'll do after college
Grads go to shipyards and naval architecture firms, the Navy's engineering commands and their contractors, offshore energy companies, classification societies like ABS and DNV, port authorities, and the fast-growing offshore wind industry. Maritime academy grads often sail first as licensed engineers — unusually well paid for a job you can start at 22 — then come ashore into port engineering, marine surveying, or fleet operations.
Pay in this field is strong and unusually flat across it, and the academies post some of the highest early-career earnings of any undergraduate program in the country, because a license plus documented sea time is genuinely scarce. The trade-off is that the field is small and cyclical, rising and falling with shipbuilding orders, defense budgets, and offshore energy. It is also tight-knit enough that a reputation, good or bad, travels the whole industry.

- David W. Taylor — Rear Admiral and the father of American naval architecture; the Navy's model basin still carries his name. U.S. Naval Academy, then naval construction at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich
- Don Walsh — One of the first two people to reach the bottom of the Challenger Deep, aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste; U.S. Naval Academy, later a Ph.D. in oceanography from Texas A&M
- William Francis Gibbs — Naval architect behind the SS United States and the wartime Liberty ship program; largely self-taught, after Harvard and a Columbia law degree
- Michael Triantafyllou — MIT professor whose robotic tuna and fish-inspired vehicles reshaped underwater robotics; Ph.D. in ocean engineering from MIT
