What you'll do in college

Chemistry majors learn how matter is built and how it reacts. The core sequence covers general, organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry, with biochemistry adding the molecules of life. Labs are central from day one—you'll spend many afternoons synthesizing compounds, running spectrometers, and writing up results.

Organic chemistry has a fearsome reputation but is the gateway for premeds and biochemists. Most programs include a research project with a professor in your junior or senior year.

What you'll do after college

Chemistry grads work in pharmaceuticals, biotech, energy, materials, food and consumer products, forensics, and environmental labs. Many also use the major as a path to medical, dental, pharmacy, or veterinary school.

Day-to-day lab work involves running experiments, analyzing data, and—if you continue to grad school—pushing into territory no one has explored. Pay is moderate at the bachelor's level and rises significantly with a master's or PhD.

Famous graduates

  • Carolyn Bertozzi — Nobel laureate in Chemistry; B.A. in Chemistry from Harvard University
  • Kary Mullis — Nobel laureate and inventor of PCR; B.S. in Chemistry from Georgia Tech
